Frequently Asked Questions

From what to pack to what happens on the trail, here’s everything you need to know before joining the Cape Town Camino.

1. What is the Cape Town Camino?

The Cape Town Camino is a five-day guided slackpacking experience that brings together coastal walks, mountain trails, comfortable accommodation and a taste of Cape Town’s food and wine. You explore on foot during the day, then settle in for good food, company and a comfortable bed each evening.

2. What is slackpacking?

Slackpacking means you hike with only a daypack while your main luggage is transported between accommodation stops. You carry your water, snacks, extra layers and personal essentials for the day. There’s no need to carry a heavy overnight backpack, tent or bedding.

3. How fit do I need to be?

You should be comfortable walking for several hours and tackling uphill sections, steps and uneven ground. Some days are more demanding than others, so regular walking and a few practice hikes beforehand will help you enjoy the experience. If you’re unsure whether it’s right for you, get in touch before booking.

4. Do I need hiking experience?

You don’t need to be an experienced trekker, but some experience on mountain trails is helpful. This is an active walking holiday with a mix of coastal paths and mountain terrain. Being comfortable outdoors and prepared for consecutive days of walking matters more than speed.

5. Is the Camino guided?

Yes. The Cape Town Camino is a guided experience. Your guides lead the walks and help the group navigate each day’s route, so you can spend more time enjoying your surroundings.

6. How far do we walk each day?

Distances and elevation gain vary by day. The itinerary combines mountain hikes with gentler coastal walking, so distance alone doesn’t tell the whole story. Check the Route page for descriptions of the planned distance, ascent and terrain.

7. Do I have to keep up with fast hikers?

The Camino is about enjoying the journey together. Expect time to take in the views, catch your breath and take photographs. You should still be comfortable completing each day’s walk at a steady group pace. If pace is a concern, speak to us before booking.

8. How many people are in each group?

Our planned group size is a maximum of 10 guests. This keeps the experience personal and gives everyone a chance to connect along the way.

9. Can I join on my own?

Absolutely. You’re welcome to join solo, with a partner or with friends. Shared walks and evenings together offer plenty of opportunities to get to know your fellow travelers. Contact us about room arrangements before booking as a solo guest as there will be a single supplementary fee.

10. Where will we stay?

The planned experience includes two nights at Cape Point Hideaways, followed by three nights at Isundu Villa in Sea Point. You’ll have a comfortable base to return to after each day’s adventure, without setting up camp.

11. Does the trip include five nights of accommodation?

Yes. You arrive and spend your first night with us before the first hiking day. The experience includes five nights of accommodation and five days of walking. It ends after the final day’s walk and farewell lunch, with no overnight stay included that evening.

12. Will I have to share a room?

Room arrangements depend on your booking and the available accommodation. Let us know whether you’re travelling alone, as a couple or with friends so we can confirm the options. If you would prefer a private room, please ask about availability and any additional cost before booking.

13. What is included in the package?

The experience is built around guided walks, five nights of accommodation, luggage transfers and transport between the scheduled activities, along all meals, drinks and experiences specified in your booking. Please check the full inclusions list for your chosen departure so you know exactly what is covered.

14. Will I need spending money?

Yes. Allow for personal purchases, optional activities, and any meals or drinks not specifically included in your package. Your booking information will explain what is included and what you’ll need to pay for separately.

15. Can you accommodate dietary requirements?

Please tell us about any allergies or dietary requirements when enquiring. We’ll check with our accommodation and dining partners and confirm what can be arranged before you book.

16. What should I pack?

Bring comfortable hiking shoes with good grip, hiking clothes, a waterproof jacket, a warm layer, sun protection, a refillable water bottle and a comfortable daypack. You’ll also want casual clothing for the evenings and any personal medication. Wear shoes you have already walked in comfortably.

17. What do I carry during the day?

Just your daypack with water, snacks, sun protection, a waterproof jacket, an extra layer and any personal items you need on the trail. We provide you with a packed lunch each day. Your main luggage stays at the accommodation or is transferred to the next stop.

18. What happens if the weather is bad?

The itinerary may need to change if conditions make a planned route unsuitable. Routes, start times or activities may be adjusted, with safety guiding those decisions. Bring layers and rain protection so you’re prepared for changing conditions. We will hike in rain where safe, but not in heavy winds and will adjust the day's itinerary accordingly.

19. Can I join if I’m uncomfortable with heights?

Some mountain sections may feel challenging if you’re uncomfortable with heights or exposed terrain. Please speak to us before booking so we can explain the planned routes and help you assess whether the experience is suitable for you.

20. What if I need to miss a day’s hike?

Let the team know as early as possible if you’re feeling unwell or need a rest day. We’ll discuss what is practical within that day’s itinerary. You are welcome to sit out for day and enjoy some down time at the accommodation for that day.

21. Do I need to arrange transport between the hikes?

Transport required for the scheduled itinerary is arranged as part of the experience. Travel to the initial meeting point and onward travel after the Camino should be planned separately unless your booking specifically includes it.

22. Where do we meet, and where does the Camino finish?

Your pre-arrival information will confirm the meeting point and time. The planned final day follows the Atlantic Seaboard from the V&A Waterfront to Camps Bay, where we finish with a farewell lunch and celebration.

23. Where can I leave my car?

Please let us know if you plan to drive to the meeting point. We’ll confirm the parking arrangements and any applicable costs before your departure.

24. Is the Cape Town Camino a religious pilgrimage?

No religious affiliation is required. Come for the hiking, scenery, company or simply the chance to step away from your usual routine. You’re welcome to give the journey whatever personal meaning feels right for you.

25. Can we book as a private group?

Absolutely. If you’d like to join with a group of friends, family or colleagues, contact us with your preferred dates and group size. We can discuss availability and whether a private departure can be arranged.
